Stehekin is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the wilderness splendor without interference from TVs or phones. As with all places in the Lake Chelan area, advance reservations are a must in the summer. Stehekin Landing Resort (509/682-4494, www.stehekinlanding.com, $139–185 s or d) has lodge rooms and housekeeping units. Amenities include a restaurant, bar, bike and boat rentals, a marina, gas, and groceries. During the winter, the Park Service and the resort jointly maintain 19 kilometers of free cross-country ski trails. Rent skis in Chelan or bring your own. The resort has snowshoes for rent.

At Stehekin Valley Ranch (509/682-4677 or 800/536-0745, http://stehekinvalleyranch.com, open mid-June–early Oct., $85–95 per person), nine miles up from Stehekin, your lodging, three hearty meals, and local transportation are included in the price of your cabin. Most are primitive tent cabins with no running water or electricity, and kerosene lamps for light. Showers are nearby. They also have several nicer cabins with private baths.

Several other Stehekin area houses and cabins are also available for rent by the day or week. These include Silver Bay Inn at Stehekin (509/682-2212 or 800/555-7781, www.silverbayinn.com), Stehekin Log Cabin (509/682-7742, http://stehekinpastry.com), and Flick Creek House (888/841-3556, www.stehekinvalley.com). Call for rates, as they vary wildly by date.
