Access for Travelers with Disabilities
In existence since 1977, the nonprofit Alliance of People with disAbilities (206/545-7055 or 877/539-0212, www.disabilitypride.org) works to provide advocacy, education, and other assistance for people with significant disabilities. The Washington Department of Transportation’s website (www.wsdot.wa.gov/choices) has details on accessible transportation choices. Wheelchair Getaways (888/376-1500, www.wheelchairgetaways.com) rents wheelchair-friendly vans in Seattle.
Washington is a leader in developing barrier-free recreation sites on federal and state lands, and the state publishes a detailed Accessible Outdoor Recreation Guide. Find it at visitors centers, by calling 360/902-3000, or on the Web at www.parks.wa.gov/ada-rec. See also Accessible Trails in Washington’s Backcountry, published by The Mountaineers (www.mountaineers.org).
