Visit the Ellensburg National Art Show and Auction (509/962-2934) the third weekend in May. More than 200 artists display their works. The highlight for many is the “Quick Draw,” when about a dozen artists each create a work of art in 45 minutes.
The Whisky Dick Triathlon (509/925-3137 or 888/925-2204, www.whiskydick.com) subjects entrants to a one-mile swim in the 60°F Columbia River and a 28-mile bike leg climbing 1,900 feet in the first 12 miles. At least the 10K running leg is on level ground!
Held the second weekend following Labor Day at Olmstead Place State Park, the Threshing Bee (509/925-3137) gives city slickers an opportunity to see blacksmithing, plowing, and steam and gas threshing. A big country breakfast is served in the morning, and an antique tractor pull contest is a highlight.
