Rhododendrons
Washington’s state flower—the coast rhododendron—is found from British Columbia south to northern California and east to the foothills of the Cascades. About 500 pure rhododendron species are hardy to this climate, along with several hundred more greenhouse varieties, which are combined and cross-pollinated to produce thousands of hybrids.
Rhodies are standard fare in western Washington gardens, relatively easy to grow and beautiful to behold, in colors from yellows to pinks to bright reds and whites. The best-known rhododendron gardens are on Whidbey Island, Bainbridge Island, and in the towns of Federal Way and Brinnon. Visit in spring and early summer to enjoy them at their peak.
