Smuggler’s Cove

One of Tortola’s best all-around beaches, Smuggler’s Cove is a small crescent of sand fringed by sea grape trees and coconut palms, and book-ended by two sugarloaf mountains. Almost always calm, Smuggler’s Cove is as popular with residents as it is with tourists. A small reef at the western end provides some entertainment for those who need more than crystalline water and soft sandy shore. Two impermanent beach bars sell cold drinks and snacks, and rent beach chairs.

A proposal to build a villa resort at Smuggler’s Cove was thankfully scratched in 2008, and there has been some talk about making the beach a national park.

Smuggler’s Cove is at the end of a bumpy gravel road. To get there, drive past Long Bay and continue past a steep uphill segment at the end of the beach. Here the road turns to gravel and you can choose from the low or high road: Either route takes you to the beach.
