Located on Trellis Bay, The Beef Island Guesthouse (284/495-2303, fax 284/495-1611, $115 winter, $90 summer) is homey, comfortable, and well run. The guesthouse’s four rooms boast comfortable beds, ceiling fans, and private baths. There is a shared living room, full kitchen, and screened-in porch. Amenities include satellite TV, high-speed Internet, and continental breakfast.

The guesthouse is set right on Trellis Bay, where you can swim or relax in a hammock. There is a restaurant and beach bar next door. The guesthouse is the only place to stay within walking distance of the airport and is a popular choice for people who need a room the day before or after their sailing charter.

The white, concrete Josiah’s Bay Inn (tel./fax 284/495-2818, $80 winter, $65 summer) is a 10-minute walk to Josiah’s Bay beach, popular among surfers and sunbathers. The one- to four-bedroom apartments are plain but clean and come equipped with full kitchens.

Another choice in the Josiah’s Bay area is Serendipity House (284/495-1488, fax 284/494-5774, www.serhouse.com, $75–150). The house has one- to five-bedroom suites, including full kitchens, TV, telephone, and a shared pool. The beach is a 10-minute walk down shady Josiah’s Bay Road.

The Tamarind Club (284/495-3477, fax 284/495-2795, www.tamarindclub.com, $110–140 winter, $90–120 summer) is a small inn set amid flamboyant trees on the road to Josiah’s Bay beach. The nine rooms face either the pool or the garden and come equipped with air-conditioning, phone, and television (no cable, but plenty of videos). There is a continental breakfast for guests.
