At the top of the headland between Hawksnest and Trunk Bays is Peace Hill, a grassy knoll and windmill ruin with beautiful views of the British Virgin Islands and the north shore of St. John. The land was donated to Virgin Islands National Park in the 1950s by Colonel Wadsworth, who wished that “Peace Hill be perpetually dedicated as a place where people might meditate and find inner peace, in the hope that in some way this might contribute to world peace.”
In 1953 Wadsworth commissioned a statue of Jesus, which he named “Christ of the Caribbean.” The statue gradually deteriorated and was eventually knocked down by Hurricane Marilyn in 1995. The Park Service put up a plaque in its place.
Today, the main attractions at Peace Hill are the ruins of the windmill and the spectacular views of Trunk Bay and the British Virgin Islands. This is a nice place to take pictures.
There is a small parking area with a sign marking the trailhead to Peace Hill. It is a 0.25-mile hike uphill to the hill. There is an unmaintained, steep foot trail to Denis Bay that veers off about 50 yards up the Peace Hill trail on the right when you are hiking in. This is a pretty, rarely visited beach. Be aware that the home at the eastern end of Denis Bay is private property.
