Cobblestone walkways and weathered stone walls lend an old-world feel to this modern retreat. Rooms have a clean, calm atmosphere with white walls and polished wood finishes and furnishings. Some of the 10 rooms have views of the ocean, and all come with air-conditioning, cable TV, refrigerators, microwaves, and coffeemakers. A free continental breakfast is served daily, and a fine restaurant serves dinner nightly on-site.

A pool and restaurant are on-site, and Cruz Bay is a short, downhill walk away.
One of the two large resorts on St. John, The Westin (Great Cruz Bay, 340/693-8000, U.S. toll-free 888/627-7206, www.westinresortstjohn.com, $500–1,400 winter, $250–1,000 summer) sprawls along the beach at Great Cruz Bay. The 175 rooms come with all the amenities you would expect, plus free Starbucks coffee, Nintendo game systems, and two voicemail boxes. Across the street are the Westin Villas, which offer added privacy and luxury with the bonus of resort amenities.
