Hiking

There are no formal hiking trails or maps on Jost. Nonetheless, those who enjoy exploring on their own two feet will find plenty of ground to cover. The ridge road is a great place for walking, and once you climb the steep hills to get there it is not too demanding. You can reach the ridge by following the roads up from the western end of White Bay, the western end of Great Harbour (behind Rudy’s), and the eastern end of Little Harbour. Jost Van Dyke Watersports can help you find goat trails and paths that cut through the wilderness and plans to offer hiking trails in the near future. Experienced backcountry hikers can delight themselves exploring the undeveloped west and northwest parts of Jost.

If you hike, do not underestimate the punishing sun, steep hills, the possibility that the weather could suddenly change, or the possibility that you could be walking much longer than you expect. The potential to get lost or hurt grows if you venture into the wilderness. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water, sun protection, and food. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back. Bring a means of communication with you if you can.
