Getting to Jost Van Dyke

People who don’t get to Jost on a private or charter yacht come by ferry. New Horizon Ferry Service (284/495-9278) makes the 25-minute trip between Tortola’s West End and Jost five times a day. It leaves West End, Tortola, at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 6 p.m. Monday–Friday, and 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 6 p.m. on weekends. Round-trip fare is $25 per person. There is no need for advance reservations, but expect to pay with cash.

Jost’s small size and limited road network make renting a car a luxury, not a necessity. If you are willing to do some walking, it is fairly easy to navigate White Bay and Great Harbour on foot—although you should be prepared for a tough climb in between them. Walking to Little Harbour on the east end is possible, but a much more serious undertaking.

If you opt for wheels, Abe and Eunicy (Little Harbour, 284/495-9329) will rent you a two-door or four-door Jeep for $50–80 a day.

Taxis will happily run you between the various bays on Jost or take you on a sightseeing tour along the Ridge Road. Abe’s Taxi (284/496-8429) and Jost Van Dyke Safari Service (284/495-9329) are good bets. Taxi rates are set by the government. Expect to pay $10 for a journey from Great Harbour to the Sandcastle and $12 from Great Harbour to Little Harbour. Per-person rates go down when you have more than three people. Ask upfront about rates to avoid any confusion.
