The Caribbean has the second highest prevalence rate for HIV/AIDS in the world, behind sub-Saharan Africa. The countries of Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Bahamas have been worst affected; they have infection rates of 3 percent.
The Virgin Islands have relatively low rates of infection, although AIDS advocates say that much more needs to be done to arrest the spread of the disease. According to the latest figures, there are 29.5 cases per 100,000 people in the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 2008 there were 23 people in the BVI living with HIV or AIDS.
Unsafe sex is dangerous in any country, including the Virgin Islands. If you plan to have promiscuous sex (or even if you don’t), pack condoms and use them.
