The Kingsway is a main thoroughfare linking downtown to Burnaby. It is lined with a smattering of inexpensive motels—perfect if you want to save a few dollars and like the convenience of being a short bus ride from downtown. Another advantage is that you won’t need to worry about parking (or paying for parking). Nearby is a cluster of inexpensive restaurants, the perfect place for a budget-conscious traveler to end the day with a good meal.

The least expensive lodging choices in this part of the city are old motels along the Kingsway, the main route between downtown and New Westminster. At the bottom of the price spectrum is the 2400 Motel (2400 Kingsway, 604/434-2464, $95 s or d), an old roadside-style place with basic rooms, cable TV, and coffee and newspapers offered in the office each morning. It’s near Nanaimo Street and within walking distance of the 29th Avenue SkyTrain station.
$100–150
Pillow Suites (2859 Manitoba St., Mt. Pleasant, 604/879-8977, www.pillow.net, $125–265 s or d) is a unique lodging three bocks west of the Kingsway and a few hundred meters east of City Hall. The six suites are spread through three adjacent, colorfully painted heritage houses. Each unit is fully self-contained with a kitchen, en suite bathroom, telephone, cable TV, fireplace, and private entrance. Rates range from $125 for the Country Store—formerly a corner store and now filled with brightly painted appliances—to $265 for a complete three-bedroom house that sleeps six comfortably.

Holiday Inn Vancouver Centre (711 W. Broadway, 604/879-0511 or 877/660-8550, www.hivancouver.com, $189–249 d) is a two-minute walk to waterfront Charleson Park and then less than one kilometer (0.6 mile) west along False Creek to Granville Island. The hotel itself features 193 rooms spread over 16 floors, an indoor pool complex that opens to an outdoor deck with great views, a lounge, and a restaurant.
