Gay and Lesbian Travelers

Gay travelers will find Utah even less welcoming to openly gay people than many of the surrounding Western states. There’s a gay scene of sorts in Salt Lake City, but very little sign of support elsewhere in the state. In 1996, a bookstore owned by two gay men was burned in southern Utah and the owners were forced to leave town. Not surprisingly, Utah gays and lesbians tend to be extremely discreet.

Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of community resources for gay and lesbian travelers. Salt Lake City’s two gay newspapers, Q and Pillar, are a good places to get a flavor for the Utah gay scene. Many of the support groups that do exist in the state are concerned with supporting gay and lesbian Mormons.
