Mexican rock bands have found fervent fans here in the borderlands for as long there’s been Mexican rock-and-roll, and it’s been around nearly as long as the American kind—long before bands like Santana, Los Lobos, and Los Lonely Boys broke into the mainstream.
At Sharks nightclub downtown the tradition continues every Friday night, when rock en español draws a crowd. Other nights the mostly youngish crowd hits the small, sweaty dance floor with the help of DJs playing a mix of rock, hip-hop, and dance music, and on Tuesday there’s karaoke.
