On your way east from Tucson on I-10 about 20 miles before Willcox, get off at the Dragoon exit (exit 318) to visit this excellent Amerind Foundation Museum (520/586-3666, www.amerind.org, daily 10 a.m.–4 p.m., June–Sept. closed Mon.–Tues., $4 adult, $3 child 12–18) in beautiful Texas Canyon.
Established in 1937, the Amerind Foundation (Amerind is a contraction of American and Indian) preserves and studies Native American cultures from prehistory all the way to the Chiricahua Apache and beyond. It is commonly thought to hold one of the best private ethnological collections in the nation.
The museum is fascinating, and the location, among the imposing boulders of Texas Canyon, makes it well worth the stop.
