Just east of I-35 is the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center (1165 Angelina St., 512/974-3699, www.carvermuseum.org, 9:30 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon., Wed., and Fri.; 9:30 a.m.–8 p.m. Tues. and Thurs.; 1–5 p.m. Sat., free). In addition to the Mexic-Arte, The Carver is another much-needed venue dedicated to one of Austin’s underrepresented cultural groups.
Education gets top billing here, evident in the museum’s impressive galleries. The permanent exhibits showcase the significant contributions Austin’s African-American families have made to the city, including background information about the people behind the names of parks and streets.
The Carver Museum also features a theater, dance studio, archive space, artist’s gallery, and a children’s exhibit about African-American scientists and inventors.
