Southwest of the city center, about 15 minutes’ drive from the airport, is T. O. Fuller State Park (1500 Mitchell Rd., 901/543-7581). The visitors center here is open weekdays 8 a.m.–4:40 p.m. Amenities at the 1,138-acre park include sheltered picnic areas, tennis courts, a golf course, swimming pool ($3), basketball courts, softball field, six miles of hiking trails, and camping facilities.
T. O. Fuller State Park was the first state park east of the Mississippi River open to African Americans, and the second in the nation.
