An unusual delight, the National Ornamental Metal Museum (374 Metal Museum Dr., 901/774-6380, www.metalmuseum.org, Tues.–Sat. 10 a.m.–5 p.m., adults $5, seniors $4, students and children $3) is dedicated to preserving and displaying fine metalwork.

Its permanent collection numbers more than 3,000 objects, and ranges from contemporary American sculpture to works as many as 500 years old. The museum hosts special exhibits several times a year, showcasing various aspects of metalwork.

There is also a working metalwork studio, and the museum grounds on the bluff overlooking the Mississippi are an attraction in themselves. This is reputed to be the site where Hernando de Soto and his men camped when they passed through the area in 1542.
