During Beale Street’s dark days of the 1970s and ’80s, when the clubs and restaurants closed and the pawn shops opened, one store remained: A. Schwab (163 Beale St., 901/523-9782, Mon.–Fri. 9 a.m.–5 p.m.). This landmark general store opened in 1876 and has been owned and operated by the same family ever since.
Originally the source of household necessities for thousands of Delta residents, A. Schwab remains a treasure trove of goods. Here you will find practical things like underwear, hats, cookware, and tools, as well as novelties like old-fashioned candy, incense, and actual cans of Tennessee whoop-ass.
Upstairs is the A. Schwab Museum, a hodge-podge of old-time tools, clothes, and memorabilia of the store’s 130-plus-year history.
