The refurbished Artisan Hotel (1837 Union Ave., 901/278-4100, www.artisanmemphis.com, $80–90) is a smoke-free 160-room boutique hotel in midtown. Each room is decorated with the work of a different classical artist; common areas have lots of heavy-duty wood paneling, lots of stone, and sculpture accents. Amenities include an outdoor swimming pool, Internet access, and an on-site restaurant and lounge.
There are a few budget hotels within trolley distance of downtown. The Red Roof Inn (42 S. Camilla St., 901/526-1050, $70–100) is about two blocks from the Madison Avenue trolley and has a dismal, but free, breakfast. The Motel 6 (210 S. Pauline St., 901/528-0650, $45–70) is about three blocks from the trolley. These choices are certainly not ritzy, but they’re acceptable and see a large number of budget travelers.
