Chilhowee Park (3301 Magnolia Ave.), located off Magnolia Avenue in East Knoxville, was the city’s first major park. The first streetcar line in the city connected downtown with Chilhowee, and on weekends, holidays, and hot summer days throngs would come here for a picnic, a splash in the lake, or to watch baseball games, horse races, or concerts.
Chilhowee is no longer the destination it once was—the mall, the mountains, and the motor car have seen to that—but it is still significant. The 80-acre park has playgrounds, picnic tables, and paths for walking. It also has the Jacob Building, a large exhibit hall used for all manner of gatherings and events.
The Knoxville Zoo, Knox County Fairgrounds, and East Tennessee Science Discovery Center all abut Chilhowee Park for a recreation bonanza.
