Presbyterian missionaries established a school for freedmen in Knoxville in 1875, and two years later this educational institution was designated as a college. Knoxville College has been educating African Americans since.

The campus is an architectural mixed bag—elegant historic structures share space with low-slung modern buildings. Budget challenges have dogged Knoxville College over its modern history, but it has persisted nonetheless in its mission to educate the next generation of black leaders.

Knoxville College is located in Mechanicsville, an old neighborhood found at the intersection of Western Avenue and Middlebrook Pike.
