Set in a slightly scruffy neighborhood, Dixon Bar-B-Que (1201 E. Magnolia Ave., 865/525-9305, Thurs.–Sat. 4:30 p.m.–midnight, $6–15) is one of Knoxville’s authentic barbecue houses, where the ribs and chicken are smoked the old-fashioned way.
Southern
Arguably Knoxville’s best meat-and-three Southern-food house, Chandlers (3101 E. Magnolia Ave., 865/595-0212, Mon.–Thurs. 11 a.m.–7:30 p.m., Fri. 11 a.m.–8:30 p.m., Sat. noon–8:30 p.m., Sun. noon–6 p.m., $4–10) is a cafeteria-style restaurant where workingmen and businesspeople rub elbows when the dinner bell rings. The fried chicken is always reliable, and comes with sides like hot rolls, collard greens, fried okra, and stewed apples.
