Third Street

Drive or walk up and down Third Street, admiring the stately old homes (all in private hands, don’t trespass!). Of particular interest is the 1823 Lafayette House (235 Third St.), a two-story affair which hosted the Marquis De Lafayette during his stay here on his 1825 American tour.

Another beauty is The Teacherage (230 Third St.), considered the oldest extant building in Cheraw (built before 1785, with a wing added in the 1840s) and named for its 20th century role as a teacher’s boarding house. The Malloy family entertained Woodrow Wilson’s father here in the 1800s.
