A modest but key aspect of African American history on Hilton Head is at Union Cemetery (Union Cemetery Rd.), a small burial ground featuring several graves of black Union Army troops (you can tell by the designation “U.S.C.I.” on the tombstone, or “United States Colored Infantry”). Also of interest are the charming, hand-carved cement tombstones of non-veterans.
Getting to Union Cemetery
To get to Union Cemetery, turn north off of William Hilton Parkway onto Union Cemetery Road. The cemetery is a short ways ahead on your left. There is no signage or site interpretation.
