Back on Highway 522 heading south from Questa, after 3.5 miles you pass the turn for the Red River Fish Hatchery, an operation that produces almost 400,000 trout every year to stock lakes all over northern New Mexico.
Dedicated anglers, or just people whose kids are getting antsy in the back seat, can stop into the visitors center (9 a.m.–5 p.m. daily). There’s a free self-guided tour, and you can feed “trout chow” to the growing guppies.
