Outside Santa Fe

Less than an hour’s drive from Santa Fe lie all manner of fascinating destinations, whether you’re interested in the 600-year-old ruins of ancestral Puebloan culture at Bandelier or the 20th-century atomic developments in Los Alamos, home of the Manhattan Project.

Abiquiu, best known as Georgia O’Keeffe country, is a landscape of rich red rocks along the tree-lined Rio Chama, while Pecos Wilderness Area, east of the city, is a great spot to hike to alpine meadows.

The most popular day or overnight outing from Santa Fe is to Taos, but even that presents two possibilities: the low road along the Rio Grande or the high road that passes through tiny Hispano mountain villages.
