From the outside, Juanita’s (910 4th St. SW, 505/843-9669, 7:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Mon.–Fri., 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Sat., $5.50) looks like an abandoned Dairy Queen. Inside, though, it’s all color and activity—flower-print tablecloths and lots of sizzle from the half-open kitchen, where hairnetted ladies build giant burritos, crispy tacos, and (most recommended) savory Mexican-style tortas (sandwiches) on pillowy white rolls. Jarritos sodas and imported, all-cane-sugar Coca-Cola wash it down. If you’re getting your order to go, make sure you get some of the sharp red salsa.
