Hotel Parador Palmas de Lucia (Carr. 901 at Carr. 9911, Playa Lucia, Yabucoa, 787/893-4423, www.tropicalinnspr.com, $119 s/d, includes breakfast and snacks) is a modern motel-style property with a petite pool and a small sandy beach half a block away. It has 34 simple, comfortable rooms featuring air-conditioning, satellite TV, refrigerators, microwaves, coffeemakers, and balconies. There’s a restaurant on-site serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Lucia Beach Villas (Carr. 99011 at Carr. 901, Yabucoa, 787/266-1111 or 787/266-1716, www.luciabeachvillas.com, $152 for 2 people, $185 for 4, $250 for 6) is a newly constructed, modern townhouse-style complex of 15 connected units located in a remote spot where you can see the mountains meet the sea. The two-story units with loft-style bedrooms feature air-conditioning, satellite TV, Wi-Fi, full kitchens, 1.5 baths, and a pool with a dramatic backdrop that features a natural waterfall that trickles down the mountain behind it. Each unit sleeps up to six people. There’s no restaurant on-site, but a secluded public beach is located right across the street.
Costa del Mar Guest House (Carr. 901, km 5.6, Yabucoa, 787/266-6276 or 787/893-6374, fax 787/893-6374, www.tropicalinnspr.com, 2-night stay $359 for 2 people, $55 for 3, and $570 for 4, includes breakfast) is a new property with 16 units, 12 of which overlook the ocean (although there is no beach access). Amenities include air-conditioning, satellite TV, balconies, a pool, and a basketball court.
Caribe Playa Beach Resort (Carr. 3, km 112, Patillas, 787/839-6339, fax 787/839-1817, www.caribeplaya.com, $130 s/d plus tax) is a bit of a misnomer. It’s too small, modest, and low-key to qualify for what most people think of when they think of a resort. Instead, it is quaintly old-fashioned, intimate, casual, and quiet. The pale yellow and white motel-style structure hugs the coastline so closely that you can practically hear the waves lapping the beach from the bed. The 27 units are simply furnished and come with air-conditioning, satellite TV, refrigerators, and coffee makers. Wi-Fi is available in common areas. The grounds are lushly landscaped and appointed with grills, shady hammocks, umbrella tables, and lounge chairs. The seaside Ocean View Terrace serves three meals a day.
Parador Caribbean Paradise (Carr. 3, km 114.3, Patillas, 787/839-5885, fax 787/271-0069, www.caribbeanparadisepr.com, $80–99) is a motel-style facility with 24 rooms. Rooms come with air-conditioning, cable TV, and a coffeemaker. Amenities include a swimming pool, tennis courts, and basketball courts.
