Bosque Estatal de Guilarte (intersection of Carr. 518 and Carr. 131, 787/724-3647 or 787/829-5767, Mon.–Fri. 7 a.m.–3:30 p.m., Sat.–Sun. 9 a.m.–5:30 p.m.) is a 3,600-acre subtropical wet forest reserve featuring Monte Guilarte, the third-highest peak on the island at 3,953 feet above sea level. There is one marked trail, which offers a 30-minute hike to the mountain’s summit. The forest has 26 bird species and 105 species of trees, including a eucalyptus grove.
Unlike other forest reserves, Guilarte has five rustic cabins with bunk beds that rent for $20 a night. A permit is required, and visitors must provide their own bedding.
