Puerto Rico has a 94 percent literacy rate, and its educational system is structured the same as in the United States—kindergarten through 12th grade. In addition to the public school system, the Catholic Church operates a private school system. Both systems teach in Spanish. There are also several English-language private schools on the island.
There are several institutions of higher learning in Puerto Rico, the largest one being the Universidad de Puerto Rico, with campuses in Mayagüez, San Juan, Río Piedras, and Humacao. Other schools include Universidad Polytechnica de Puerto Rico, Universidad Intermericana de Puerto Rico, Universidad Carlos Albizu, and Universidad del Sagrado Corazón. There are also two arts schools—Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico and Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico.
