Located next to the Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village, the Institute of Ecotourism (91 Portal Ln., 928/282-2720, www.ioet.org, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon.–Fri., free) offers a useful overview of the region’s natural history and indigenous cultures. The easy-to-digest information about the people, animals, and plants that inhabit area is enhanced by interactive exhibitions for adults and children about geology, astronomy, and Arizona’s fragile ecosystem.

The modest grounds feature native plants, and its weekly classes and lectures on topics range from Native American storytelling to vortexes. The nonprofit institute is more than a museum, though, as it serves as a think tank for environmentally sensitive travel and tourism.
