While newcomers to Arizona once tried to strike it rich in the mines, today, visitors can go for big payouts at the Gila River Indian Community’s three casinos south of Phoenix.
Wild Horse Pass Casino (5550 W. Wild Horse Pass, 800/946-4452, www.wingilariver.com) is the closest casino to the city and the largest. In addition to live poker, blackjack, and 875 slot machines, it offers live entertainment like comedians Joan Rivers and Sinbad.
Lone Butte Casino (1200 S. 56th St., 800/946-4452, www.wingilariver.com) near Chandler features 850 slot machines and 24 Las Vegas-style table games, including blackjack and Pai Gow.
Southwest of downtown Phoenix and near Laveen, you can try your luck at Vee Quiva Casino (6443 N. Komatke, 800/946-4452, www.wingilariver.com), which has slots, bingo, table games, and a 14-table poker room with daily tournaments.
