2nd St. btwn. Pine and Lombard Sts.

One of the nation’s earliest social scenes, Headhouse Square has brought the Society Hill community together since the 18th century. Most of the founders had homes within walking distance of this colonial square and since 1745, traders, artisans, and craftsman have sold and traded goods here on weekends.

The Shambles, a covered brick courtyard stretching along 2nd Street between Pine and Lombard Streets, was built in 1803 for the community’s “market master,” the bazaar’s official goods inspector.

The tradition continues today as locals and tourists stroll on the charming cobblestone street during seasonal craft shows, art exhibitions, and weekend farmers markets. Now home to stylish restaurants, cafés, bars, and shops, Headhouse Square maintains much of the energy it must have had 250 years ago.
