Back in 1970, the first of countless Urban Outfitters to follow opened their doors in a small house on the University of Pennsylvania’s campus. With the free-love climate of the ’60s not far behind, and whiffs of the disco days of the ’70s breezing in, the urban artsy bohemian set embraced the avant-garde retailer with open suede-fringed arms.
Today, the funky fashion housed in this multimillion-dollar international chain retailer still draws some of its clientele from its original roots, and much of its inspiration from the urban hipster crowd.
The beautiful Center City warehouse-like store pays homage to the original dream with retro frocks, vintage-flavored housewares, and ironic T-shirts on four floors.
By nature of its large scale, it is no longer quite as cool as it was at the outset, yet the stylish and comfy clothes at this Philadelphia original still attract youngsters in hordes.
