The perfect addition to historic Old City, Franklin Fountain has the feel of an authentic old-school ice cream and soda shop, even though it’s only been around for a few years.

Sit at the marble countertop and enjoy a banana split or sundae made with creamy homemade ice cream. Or try a classic egg cream, made with milk, flavored syrup, and club soda. Servers dressed in traditional soda-jerk gear and the building’s early details, including tin walls and ceiling and a mosaic tile floor, help set the mood.

If you haven’t satisfied your sweet tooth with the ice cream, candy, or homemade fudge, stop into Shane Handcrafted Candies (110 Market St., 215/922-1048) a few doors down; the oldest candy shop in Philadelphia has been owned and operated by the same family for nearly 100 years.
