In the small town of Lititz, you can visit two different historic food institutions. The Wilbur Chocolate Company’s Candy Americana Museum & Store (48 N. Broad St., 717/626-3249, www.wilberbuds.com, Mon.–Sat. 10 a.m.–5 p.m., free) has a display of antique candy molds and paraphernalia; on a tour you can watch the chocolate-making process and try delicious samples.
The Julius Sturgis Pretzel House (219 E. Main St., 717/626-4354, www.juliussturgis.com, Mon.–Sat. 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. mid-Mar.–mid-Jan., Mon.–Fri. 10:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. mid-Jan.–mid-Mar., $3 adult, $2 child) was established in 1861 as America’s first commercial pretzel bakery. While most of the production has moved into a larger facility, you can still tour its original location for a guided tour.
You’ll get to twist your own pretzel and learn about the history and symbolism involved in pretzels. A store offers all kinds of pretzels, including chocolate-covered, and other treats.
