Washington Crossing Historic Park (1112 River Rd., 215/493-4076, www.ushistory.org/washingtoncrossing, Tues.–Sat. 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Sun. noon–5 p.m., $5 adult, $4 senior, $2 child) commemorates the spot where General George Washington and his troops crossed the Delaware River on Christmas night in 1776, considered a pivotal moment in the Revolutionary War.
The troops marched on to win a victory at Trenton, which paved the way for the subsequent final victories that would lead to defeat of the British army and the forming of an independent nation. The park is preserved as a historic site and nature area.
A 17-minute orientation film, Of Dire Necessity, plays throughout the day, and guided tours of various park areas and structures are offered. A reenactment is performed each Christmas Day.
