We may never get to see David Mamet in drag, but the Wilma Theater is named after Shakespeare’s fictional female alter-ego. Since the early 1970s, the company has been staging daring, tradition-defying productions of both new plays and classics, including works by Tom Stoppard, Sophocles, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Bertolt Brecht, and yes, Mamet.
Even in its beautiful and spacious home on the Avenue of the Arts, it hasn’t lost the feeling of intimacy that makes small theaters so appealing.
