Heath River Wildlife Center
Off the beaten path and in a seldom-visited part of the Amazon, the Heath River Wildlife Center is run by a local community of Ese Eja Indians. This community works closely with InkaNatura Travel, which guides the lodge’s management.
The lodge is a 4.5-hour boat journey from Puerto Maldonado and is sandwiched between Bolivia and Peru and in the middle of South America’s largest patch of protected rainforest. The lodge has six bungalows with hot showers and a rustic communal space.
The basic program is three nights, and longer programs often include the related Lake Sandoval Lodge. Trips can be booked through InkaNatura Travel (Lima tel. 01/440-2022, www.inkanatura.com, four days/three nights US$575 pp) or in the United States through Tropical Nature Travel (tel. 877/827-8350, www.tropicalnaturetravel.com).
