Marcahuasi

Marcahuasi is a strange set of rock formations on the high plains above Lima that have attracted a range of theories, from simple wind erosion to the work of UFOs or ancient cultures. The rocks are shaped like people and animals, inspiring names like the Frog, Indian, Three Virgins, and Turtle.

Marcahuasi is set amid attractive country scenery and, along with the nearby charming town of San Pedro, makes for a great weekend outing from Lima.

To arrive, catch a bus from Avenida Grau in Lima (near Plaza Grau in the center) and travel 1.5 hours to Chosica, a resort town 860 meters above sea level that is popular with those trying to escape Lima’s fog belt. There are plenty of budget and nicer lodging options here.

From Chosica’s Parque Echenique, buses leave at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to San Pedro, a beautiful four- or five-hour trip that climbs to 3,750 meters above sea level. There is a hostel (US$5 pp) in the main square, along with two restaurants and a tourist information office.

Marcahuasi, at 4,100 meters over sea level, is a three-kilometer, 1.5-hour hike; donkeys can be rented for US$6. Entry fee is US$5.
