This restored church and home (Huasacache, 6.5 km from Arequipa, tel. 054/44-2460, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. daily, US$3), 20 minutes outside of town, was first owned by Garcí Manuel de Carbajal, who founded Arequipa in 1540.

The house later became a Jesuit retreat before being bought and restored by the city’s illustrious Archbishop José Sebastián de Goyeneche in the early 1800s.

The church is plain, with an arching stone ceiling, and the home has a large patio flanked with rooms filled with original paintings and furniture. A taxi costs around US$4 for a one-way ride.
