Huaraz lies at the top of the Callejón de Huaylas, a river valley that cuts between the Cordilleras Blanca and Negra.

As you descend into the valley, there are a handful of pleasant towns. Among them, Carhuaz, Yungay, and Caraz are reasonable base-town alternatives to Huaraz.
