Prescription Drugs
Generic medicines are easy to buy in Peru, much cheaper than in the U.S. or Europe, though quality might not always be the same. Travelers used to stock up their medical kit in Peru, but nowadays there are more restrictions with prescribed medicine, especially if you want to purchase it in big pharmacies, hospitals, or clinics. Specific birth control or allergy pills can be hard to find in Peru, unless you go to a private clinic pharmacy.
Though it’s tempting, avoid self-medicating. Visiting a Peruvian doctor is inexpensive compared to U.S. and European rates. They are the world’s leading experts on bacteria and parasite conditions specific to Peru, anyway, so it’s worth it. You can waste a lot of time and money, and negatively affect your health, taking ciprofloxacin, for instance, when another medicine would have been better.
