All overseas flights from Europe and North America arrive in Lima at Jorge Chávez International Airport (tel. 01/517-3502 24-hour customer service, tel. 01/511-6055 flight info, www.lap.com.pe for flight info). Many travelers wait in the airport for connecting flights, while others head to Miraflores or the center (about 16 km away), where there is a good selection of hotels. The airport has a range of services, including a place to leave luggage for US$5 per day.

There is a US$6 tax on all domestic flights leaving Lima and a US$30 tax on all departing international flights. On your way home, arrive at the airport 2–3 hours in advance. Airlines are notorious for changing flights and bumping passengers, so reconfirm your tickets 72 hours ahead of time and confirm flight time before heading to the airport.

There are a few other obscure international flights into the country outside Lima. Lloyd Aereo Boliviano (in Lima José Pardo 231, tel. 01/241-5210, or U.S. tel. 800/337-0918) runs a flight Tuesday and Saturday between La Paz, Bolivia, and Cusco. This allows Peru travelers to arrive in La Paz, travel overland to Cusco via Lake Titicaca, and then return to La Paz without having passed through Lima.

There are no longer direct flights from Miami to Iquitos. However, there are flights between Iquitos and the border town of Leticia, Colombia, operated by AviaSelva (in Iquitos, Próspero 439). From here it is possible to cross the Amazon River to Tabatinga, Brazil, and catch connecting flights throughout Brazil. It is also possible to reach Iquitos from the Brazil/Colombia border via a nine-hour boat ride up the Amazon River.

Overland travelers most commonly enter Peru through the Lake Titicaca area of Bolivia or from buses traveling along the Pan-American Highway (Panamericana) from either northern Chile or southern Ecuador. There are a few interesting ways to cross into Ecuador.
