It’s about time Panama City got a place like the
New York Bagel Café (off Vía Argentina, next to Einstein’s Head, tel. 390-6051, 7 A.M.–8 P.M. Mon.–Fri., 9 A.M.–8 P.M. Sat., 8 A.M.–4 P.M. Sun.). It serves half a dozen decent coffees by the cup in a coffee-house atmosphere that’s more San Francisco than New York, with thrift-store furniture and art on the walls. I even spotted a beret-wearing beardo who must have taken a wrong turn in the 1950s and just kept walking.
Full breakfasts are served all day for around US$5.50. The bagels actually taste like bagels, they try their hand at Tex-Mex, and there’s free Wi-Fi.
