Hospedaje Casa Grande (Avenida Central and Calle 8 Este in Casco Viejo, tel. 211-3316, US$6 s/d, US$7 s/d with balcony) is in a historic yellow building, Aspinwall House, that now has the feel of a dicey squat. The thin walls are made of plywood and reach only two-thirds of the way to the very high ceilings. Rooms have foam mattresses and fans and little else. Bathrooms are shared.

This is a bottom-of-the-barrel place and is only for those with the tightest of budgets and a sense of adventure. Guests should keep a firm grasp on their belongings and pray no one smokes in bed. But you can’t beat the price, because of which this place is always full. It’s on well-trafficked Avenida Central. It has a gated entrance.
