Bluff Beach Retreat (cell 6677-8867, www.bluffbeachretreat.com, starts at US$145 s/d) consists of a large, lovely “beach house” and two “casitas” set in four acres of tropical garden. The beach house is built from handsome, highly polished dark wood and features a wrap-around lanai. The whole place is designed to be as open to its beautiful surroundings as possible without sacrificing comfort. It features three immaculate bedrooms, a large kitchen, and a dining and bar area.

The whole house can accommodate up to nine people for US$425. When I stopped by, though, the rooms were being rented out individually. The house, roomy as it is, doesn’t have a whole lot of privacy for people who want to be off by themselves.

The two casitas run US$145–225. La Piña can sleep two guests and Las Palmas can handle four. Both have kitchens and are clean and nicely appointed, There’s a three-night minimum stay in any of the rooms.

Yoga retreats are sometimes held here. This place and its grounds are lovely, but it doesn’t feel like the bed-and-breakfast it bills itself as, at least when I visited. The owner spends part of the year in Canada, leaving caretakers to run the place. When I stopped by, guests were left pretty much to their own devices, and I was greeted only by the angry barks of a large and rather scary-looking dog; not exactly inviting.

On the other hand, later that night I saw the caretaker escorting guests around the area by flashlight and being quite friendly and solicitous of their needs, so I may have gotten the wrong end of the stick. Still, I suspect that families or groups traveling together would love this place, but couples or solo travelers may feel a bit isolated.
