Most places to stay and eat are in Old Bank, and most of these are budget options. Residents often rent out rooms in their houses to travelers for a few dollars. This is definitely a way to become immersed in the local culture, but these rooms are generally super basic and the surroundings noisy.
Residents willing to rent rooms post signs on their houses, making it easy to wander around until something looks appealing. Trust your instincts about whether a place feels safe and comfortable before handing over money.
The most upscale accommodations are quite a ways away, between Cayo Crawl and Punta Vieja on the southeast side of the island. Out there, boat trips back to civilization are long enough that guests will usually end up eating at or near their lodgings.
