Adelsheim (16800 NE Calkins Lane, 503/538-3652), founded in 1971, was one of the first Willamette Valley wineries. From their lovely setting on the slopes of the Chehalem Mountains, the Adelsheims have continued to produce good wine.
Another family-owned winery, Penner-Ash Wine Cellars (15771 NE Ribbon Ridge Rd., 503/554-5545, Thurs.–Sun.), is typical of the small quality-driven pinot wineries.
Two miles east of Newberg, Rex Hill Vineyards (30835 Rte. 99W, 800/739-4455) highlights pinot noir, pinot gris, chardonnay, and Riesling. Persian rugs, antiques, an ornately carved front door, and a lit fireplace extend a warm welcome to visitors. In warm weather, the garden beckons. Try the winery’s excellent pinot gris.
